Contributing to a Stable Supply of Energy to Indonesia/Japan

This project is for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) of a third, 3.8 million tons per annum (mtpa) capacity liquefaction train, LNG/condensate loading jetty and additional boil off gas (BOG) facilities, expanding the existing Tangguh LNG plant constructed following the discovery of the 15 trillion cubic feet (TCF) ‘Tangguh’ (named by President Suharto and Indonesian for ‘resilience’) gas field in Bintuni Bay, West Papua Province in 1994. 1TCF of natural gas can supply 1 million tons of LNG over a period of 20 years. Chiyoda’s experience working on projects for PT Pertamina (Persero), including the Bontang LNG project and the Arun LNG project, was pivotal for its award in 2016.

The project increased the annual production capacity of the Tangguh LNG plant by 3.8 mtpa (from 7.6 to 11.4 mtpa), and was successfully completed in 2023 by working as ‘One Team’ with the client and partners to overcome challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The expanded plant supports the increasing energy demand in Indonesia by supplying 2.8 mtpa of LNG to PT. PLN, an Indonesian state-owned electric power company, and 1.0 mtpa to Kansai Electric Power Company, and contributes to a stable supply of energy to Japan.
