Aiming to commercialize CO2 methanation
Methanation - Key Technology for Gas Decarbonization
Methanation involves reacting hydrogen with CO2 to synthesize and produce methane, the main component of natural gas and the raw material for city gas, and is key to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 by replacing natural gas with synthetic methane.
World's Largest CO2 Methanation Demonstration Test Plant
Chiyoda is executing the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of a test plant as part of a technology development project being conducted by INPEX Corporation, in collaboration with Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. under a New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) grant, aimed at the practical application of a CO2 methanation system for carbon neutralization of gas. The plant, encompassing methanation, raw material supply, utility equipment and other components, will be connected to the Koshijihara Plant at INPEX’s Nagaoka Field Office in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The methanation facility has a synthetic methane (e-methane) production capacity of approximately 400 Nm3-CO2/h, equivalent to the energy needs of approximately 10,000 households.
Chiyoda is contributing to the early social implementation of methanation technology through the construction of this test plant.
