Saudi Arabia’s first heavy oil cracking facility

Chiyoda engaged in the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work of heavy oil cracking facilities (delayed coker: 103,000 barrels per day) of the Jubail Export Refinery, a large refinery planned by SATORP, a joint venture between Saudi Aramco, a state-owned oil company of Saudi Arabia, and Total, a French company, in Al Jubail, an industrial city on the east coast of Saudi Arabia. Construction was completed in October 2013 with no accidents in 29 million work hours.

The coker unit is a heavy oil cracking facility that decomposes residual oil arising from a vacuum distillation column and converts it into naphtha, light oils, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), petroleum coke, and other refined products. It was introduced in Saudi Arabia for the first time in 2013. Chiyoda’s technologies contribute to the effective use of the vast confirmed reserves of heavy oils in Saudia Arabia, which is difficult to process.
